Airbnb — Design Language System & Cereal Typeface

The DLS defined visual and interaction standards across all Airbnb platforms. It was not a style guide — it was a product in itself. We co-developed a frontend architecture that embedded the DLS directly into the development environment via an API wrapper. Design decisions became code decisions.

That integration is what made it stick — not just a set of guidelines designers followed, but a system engineers could build against directly.

As Airbnb expanded into new business areas, the DLS maintained coherence without sacrificing differentiation. Core aesthetic values and functional components stayed consistent. Each vertical had the flexibility to adapt without breaking the system.

This was the design challenge: building something rigid enough to ensure consistency and flexible enough to not become a constraint.

We needed a typeface that was ours — not borrowed, not generic. I led the effort to commission Airbnb Cereal with Dalton Maag, a London-based type foundry. The brief: warm, trustworthy, globally legible, technically excellent across every platform and device.

Cereal was not just a brand asset. It was a functional tool — optimized for readability, accessibility, and multi-language support. With Airbnb operating in 190+ countries, internationalization was a design requirement from day one, not an afterthought.

The DLS embedded accessibility guidelines from the start — not bolted on at the end. International users were part of the core design consideration, not edge cases. Airbnb Cereal was built to support multiple languages and scripts. The DLS provided tools for cultural adaptation while maintaining global consistency.

Designing at Airbnb’s scale meant that every decision had to work for millions of users across every device, language, and context.
